Guest Speaker: Ninoshka ("Nino") Lopez
Nino Lopez is a biologist from Guatemala. In her country she worked in management of natural resources and protected areas together with the local communities in terrestrial, lacustrine and marine ecosystems. Nino completed her Master's in Chile, where she evaluated marine litter on sandy beaches around the world through a citizen science program. She is currently an intern at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center where she leads the Beach Surveyor Project, which involves working with school teachers and schoolchildren from the US, Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay.
Nino will present on two important citizen science initiatives, Ocean Travelers and the Beach Surveyor Project, which are aimed at getting non-scientists and schoolchildren excited about marine environments in their local communities. She will also discuss her work with the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, and the impact it has on women scientists.
